Jack Jones

Jack Jones

Jack moved to the Columbia Valley as a child in the early 1950’s.He worked the land as a youth, becoming familiar with the geography and the climate. Subsequently, He began farming as a young man growing grains, forages, potatoes and the like. Throughout Jack’s farming career he always harbored an interest for fruits and vines. He satisfied his fruit curiosity by starting orchards in the early 1980’s. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that he pursued wine grape growing with a passion. Jack is now recognized as a premier grower, both for magnitude and most importantly quality, in all of Washington State

So remember, the next time you share one of the classic blends from the Jones of Washington Vineyard, there is over 50 years of experience behind it from Jack and his unique relationship with the land of the Columbia Valley.

I grew up working on a family farm in Quincy, Washington. Some of my first jobs included driving tractors (cultivation beans, disking, plowing, etc.), changing siphon tubes for row crops and doing orchard work. When we started planting grapes in 1997 I was still in High School.I spent summers working with the crews in the vineyards and started learning about the business. When not in the vineyards I was in school. I spent my first year managing the vineyards in 2003. Irrigation and Nutrient management is my most enjoyable and challenging responsibility. The vines are very responsive to water and fertilizer and I enjoy trying to grow a vineyard with a balance between the vegetative growth and the crop load. By achieving a balanced vine and providing the wine grapes with appropriate sun exposure the grapes yield great flavor and great wines. In addition to growing the wine grapes I am in charge of caring for the wine after fermentation is complete. After fermentation the wines need to be topped, racked and sulfured on a schedule to optimize wine quality.
